Wellness and Its Impacts

A large Pacific Northwest organization wanted to improve the health of its employees. Using one of Vivacity's products-online health risk assessment-the more than 1,800 employees who participated were given a wellness score to benchmark where they were with their own health. Once a score was determined, participants were stratified into two categories: those who were at moderate or high risk for developing costly chronic health conditions like diabetes and heart disease. They were then offered one-on-one health coaching.

In 2007, the same group of employees was given the same health risk assessment. Those that received no coaching dropped a point in their overall wellness score-from 84.82 to 83.49. The group that received high-risk coaching actually increased its overall wellness score 10 points-from 57.37 to 67.62, and those that received moderate-risk coaching increased three points-from 73.01 to 76.94.

What's even more astounding is the impact the coaching had on absenteeism. Those that received no coaching increased the number of absent days from 1.9 to 3.3! Meanwhile, those that received high-risk coaching dropped from 5 to 3.9, and those that received moderate-risk coaching dropped from 3.8 to 3.1 days absent from work due to health reasons.
